4K recording with a GoPro

4K resolution, also called 4K, refers to a horizontal display resolution of approximately 4,000 pixels. It has become slowly a standard even in action cameras which include (most of them) a 4K resolution record possibility.

I own a GoPro Hero 5 Session. Usually i prefer to record in HD mode. This has not to do with the capacity of my storage device (i use a 64 gb miniSD) but with the fact that for YouTube uploading HD is fine and enough for most viewers.

4K videos need 4K devices to be seen. Even nowadays YouTube  supports 4K, it takes a huge amount of time to upload and  to proceed your video if it is in 4K resolution. An 15 minute video is about 5 gb, and this is lots of data to upload...specially for home connections.

Nevertheless i decided to do a 4K video recording with my GoPro to see how it will goes. Usually when i record i try not to drive fast. This time i decided to have a average speed of 100-120 km/h. As far i can understand from the video that was recorded and later  edited with KDEnlive, ( i prefer free programs) colors are much better . Even in those speeds and with no video stabilization (Hero 5 Session does not have this ability) the video was stable but of course much bigger as size.

So the question is....
Does it worth to record in 4K with your action cam? The answer depends from your needs. Do you want just to upload videos to YouTube? Then the answer is NO. It does not worth it. HD will do the job. If you plan to produce and then see you recordings in your brand new 4K TV then the answer is YES. It does worth to record in 4K.

You can see my video bellow (i hope You Tube has finished processing it).
Enjoy it
